Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
