The English along with Wales Placed Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
